Car manufacturers are increasingly making green car models and if you like many others are looking for a car which is more fuel efficient and emits less CO2, here’s a rundown on the options available to you as a consumer.
First of all there are the petrol cars where improvements to the internal combustion engine teamed with stop-start technology, brake energy regeneration and other green technology advances, have lead to more fuel efficient cars. Many drivers prefer the responsiveness of a petrol engine and if you buy a small vehicle such as Hyundai i10, you’ll get a car with lower fuel consumption and low emissions. If you want to try out a

Diesel cars is usually a better choice for people who do high mileage as both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions tend to be low on diesel cars. But diesel cars produce higher levels of other exhaust gases and soot and they’re also more expensive to purchase than petrol cars.
A third option is a biofuel car which runs on fuel derived from plant matter. Biofuel is usually cheaper than diesel and petrol but you would have to spend money to convert your car and if you use the wrong biofuel blend on your car, you’ll damage it. There’s also a concern about the environmental cost of growing and refining biofuel.
A forth car option is a hybrid car which combines a battery driven electric motor with an internal combustion engine. It is low on emission but the recharging of the batteries might prove a problem. And because of the technology, the cars are expensive to buy.
Lastly there’s of course the pure electric car which have been given a lot of bad press but which tend to run smoothly in congested urban settings. But the range of the car is at best a 100 miles and if you’re wanting to drive longer distances it’s easy to get so-called ‘range anxiety’ - if your battery goes flat, you’re stuck.
In addition to all this there’s new technology out there such as fuel cell cars but these are not available to the everyday consumer yet. But if you want to go green in regards to your car, there are plenty of alternatives.
